Joel Rosenberger is a Christian folk pianist, currently residing in Peoria, IL, and who enjoys creating fresh arrangements of songs and hymns. He has been blogging and podcasting since 2005, releasing various arrangements to the public via the internet.
In response to listener demand, Joel just released his Fresh Hymns CD in August 2006. This project, which has been well received, consists of 20 original hymns played in Joel's expressive piano style, with some arrangements accompanied by additional instrumentation. He continues to blog and podcast, in addition to spreading the word about his new CD.
Joel currently has plans for a Christmas CD, to be released sometime in November, and hopes to begin performing live concerts in 2007.
Joel's current CD, Fresh Hymns, is available from CD Baby (http://www.cdbaby.com), an online record store well-known for specializing in music from independent artists.
Influences include a mix of classical composers, as well as pianists of various genres such as big-band (Carmen Cavallero), inspirational (Dino), contemporary (Billy Joel, Styx), and Christian (Michael W. Smith). He appreciates artists who take a sensitive and insightful approach to music and lyrics.
"Michael Card's music first made an impression on me when I was a college student in Grand Rapids. Here was an artist whose music invited me to contemplate deep spiritual matters along with him. I remember listening to his Present Reality album, and letting those powerful insights sink in. Although as a pianist, I don't have the power of words at my disposal, I still want to play this kind of music; that invites the listener to ponder, meditate, and capture a vision of the spiritual riches we have in Christ."
"I remember receiving a Dino Kartsonakis cassette as a child. Now here was a guy who could play the piano! He would play one song after another, as one long medley. I remember trying to emulate (ok, copy!) his playing style when I was young. My own style has evolved since then, but he served as an inspiration and a source of great musical ideas, and some of his arrangements are still in my head."
