I had dreamed for 5 years of putting on a movie night in the park ever since I had moved into my condo. We (Robyn, Mary and Curt) and I laid out detailed plans, tested our technology,and targeted October 12th. The weather report came in and it looked bad, but everyone was a good sport about it and came along anyway. We had the first movie night in my rather pristine garage with approximately 26 people. Afterwards everyone commented how they preferred to keep the event in the garage. We showed Sabrina. It was a great classic movie, a good choice for the first movie night. In this particular edition, I wanted to show Chinatown's 30s and prohibition and also allude to John Huston who made African Queen and who was also featured prominently in Chinatown. Chinatown ended up having great relevancy to California and to central California in particular as pointed out later. What a great classic film...one of the best American films ever made! I changed the movie reel at the last minute to reflect the 60s & civil rights movement. We showed this film during the week that Obama was nominated, and 45 years and one day after Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech so it was promoted as timeless relevancy. Everyone was very interested in the details around the movie, Spencer Tracy dying 17 days after shooting was concluded etc. What a great movie night...27 in the garage, several tears (me being the worst :), two correct guesses, one contest winner (Gael Humphrey) and much fun and good spirits all around.
