I've been working on free content projects for over three years, but it's only now that I can explain what that means. A new project at FreeContentDefinition.org aims to formally define the term.

I previously posted on my Ourmedia blog that I hoped this site would change its default license. It hasn't. The default for uploads is still a non-commercial Creative Commons license. As the definition shows, this is not free content.

I recently noticed that the default license used for images uploaded to Ourmedia has been changed to a "non-commercial use only" one; an unfree license which prevents those images being used on any Wikimedia project.

I started a licensing discussion on the Ourmedia wiki earlier this month to address this issue. The text in this post was published on Kuro5hin today by my boyfriend, Erik Möller. I'm hoping the arguments given in this will lead to more people pushing for a change in the default licensing at Ourmedia, which I really don't believe should be preventing commercial use.
